I couldn’t help but enjoy the noir-like tone. Stacks Fischer can really entertain with his raw-boned and gritty point of view.

Don’t try to plug this book into a genre. If you must, consider this speculative fiction. But with a mystery to solve, elements of a thriller and an overshadowing sci-fi tale, it’s probably best to label Pines by Blake Crouch a good story.
Can waiting to die drive a narrative? While the larger stakes of Karen Thompson Walker’s story The Age of Miracles are high, it’s the small things that really matter.
This story starts off fast and only continues to build tension and, finally, horror. The book is really two stories, a backstory remembered and current events. But everything comes together for the main character, Malorie, at the end for a satisfying conclusion.
It’s the reading destination that counts, and this book takes us there unlike many sci-fi stories that can’t–in a human way. For all of us, the stars are our destination.
